Our Story

Chasing Cats is a lifelong project to create the first-ever comprehensive photo catalog of all wild cat species, in an effort to protect felines across their range. Through the use of the images in targeted conservation impact campaigns, we know we will make a positive conservation difference for all wild cats. Our journey is fueled by conservation photographers (and husband and wife) Sebastian Kennerknecht and Rachel Tobias. Learn more about them below!

Sebastian Kennerknecht

Sebastian is a wildlife and conservation photographer with over fifteen years of experience creating images of wild cats and telling environmental stories about their threats. He has photographed more wild cat species than any other person in the world, including some of the most elusive felines like the Borneo bay cat.

Sebastian has produced high quality editorial photographs, time-lapses, videos, and web content featured in and by BBC Wildlife, Smithsonian, the Economist, Science, and Conservation International, among others.

Sebastian graduated with a bachelor of science in ecology and evolution from the University of California - Santa Cruz, and is an associate fellow with the International League of Conservation Photographers (iLCP).

To get other people eye to eye with wild cats, he co-founded Cat Expeditions with Rachel, a luxury tour company designed to provide unique cat experiences while giving back to conservation.

Rachel Tobias

Rachel Tobias is a passionate wildlife photographer and co-founder of Cat Expeditions, where she channels her lifelong love of nature and professional design background into crafting transformative travel experiences that connect people to the wild. At the heart of Rachel’s work is an unwavering belief that immersive experiences in nature can move others to invest in protecting wild species and habitats.

On Chasing Cats, Rachel is documenting the stories we collect along the way through video, including tales of the chase, the cats, and the  threats they face. Her video footage can be seen on our YouTube channel: have a look!
